I was born in Czechoslovakia in 1965 and escaped with my parents from Communism at the age of three. We made a dart for the border, as the Russians said they'd shut it down at midnight following their invasion. We hurriedly set off in a beat up old, two-cylinder Lada, but my dad had to patch up the tires six times because of the nails the Czechs were littering the highway with as a futile means to stop the tanks. This put us to the border well past the deadline, but fortunately it was a new border crossing which wasn't on the Russian military map. The rest of my life has been wandering from one place to another, with the same crazy luck.
