The Ballad of Jörmungandr

The giant Hymir took the oar,  
with Thor beside him, bold once more
They rowed until the land was gone,  
and Thor prepared to lure anon

He knew the time had come at last  
to face the beast from ages past, 
ror Jörmungandr, the serpent dread,  
lay deep down in the ocean bed

A mighty ox-head was prepared
as bait to get it firmly snared
It bit! It surged! The waves did roar!  
and Thor stood stiff upon the floor

He stamped so hard, the boat gave way,  
the sea grew wild, the skies turned grey
The serpent rose with gaping maw,  
but Thor stood firm without a flaw

He reached for Mjölnir down below
to finally deal the fatal blow
Yet Hymir, swift with anxious mind,  
cut loose the line, the beast declined

Back to the depths the serpent fled,  
the waves broke over her blood-red
For none should fish such wrathful might  
that spans the world both dark and bright 

There in the shoal the secrets dwell
the gates to heaven and to hell
the mystery of all and one
If you keep it - all is done
