Desire

“Did you know that Mona is in a psychiatric ward?”

Like the clink of a coin falling on hard ground and rolling away, Lara's voice lands in my fantasy state.

“No,” I reply hastily, so that I don't drift off again and think about the face that electrifies me so physically and triggers all kinds of desire in me. I can't explain what's happening inside me.

You desire what you see – I read that once. I decide to stop following Eric from Sweden on social media. We follow each other and write to each other.

I probably have a deficiency that I haven't recognized yet. I'll think about it—contemplate it. And if someone has put a curse on me or I'm under a spell that I can hardly escape, I'll perform a curse and spell condemnation ritual. I heard about it on YouTube.

I smile.

“Lara, tell me, why is Mona in the psychiatric ward? I thought she was totally down-to-earth and nice.”

"Her boyfriend—well, without the plus—with whom she lived in a shared apartment, tried for months to bring Mona back to the real world.

She had fallen head over heels for a guy from the US she met online. She sat at her computer in her pajamas, unwashed, with wine and chocolate next to her—just to like his posts.

At night, she got up because of the time difference and was happy that he always seemed to be online when she checked her account. She took this as a sign of interest in her. She didn't want to believe that he might simply never turn off his PC or notebook.

She booked a flight to the US to attend his reading at a small bookstore in Gonzales, Texas.

Apparently, she completely freaked out when she heard in his story about a person who was stalking him on Facebook and Instagram and had even written to him that she was coming to his reading.

Mona ran to the lectern, threw his books at him, and tore pages out of the copy he was reading.

It took a while for the shocked bookstore owner to call the cops, who finally took her away.

Her parents were informed to pick her up—on the condition that Mona seek psychological counseling and provide proof of it. This was the only way they could prevent her from being hospitalized in the US—and her or her parents from having to pay the costs.

That's all I know."

I feel totally sick. Could something similar happen to me because of Eric?

I say a hasty goodbye to Lara.

“Let me know how you're doing—see you next time!” she calls after me.

I run home, turn on my laptop, and delete all my accounts. With the last spark of sanity, I manage to stop myself from smashing my laptop on the tabletop.

I frantically search for the documents about the ritual for breaking curses and spells that I had printed out.
