James Woods

Just a kid

 Just a kid
I move back through my years in life
to when I was just a boy.
Shrinking from familiarity,
people rightfully thought me coy

A loner in my early years,
I loved the breath of spring.
I’d venture out in early morn.
Great pleasure did this bring!

Dressed in running garb I sped,
along the country lanes.
Across the fields in open land,
in sunshine or in rain.

I would follow the passage of a stream,
jumping to and fro!
I’d climbed most trees as I passed by,
no place would I not go.

The pleasantries of experience,
as I smell the new mown hay.
The symphony of birdsong,
with small creatures all at play.

The sly old fox is stalking,
but his quarry is also wise.
All these gifts, mine to behold,
as the sun shines from the sky.

I feel privileged at these wonders,
in my memory I keep.
Viewing nature in the raw,
while most people are asleep.

Once again I’m homeward bound;
my daily run was cool!
I quickly change my clothing
and run my way to school.

A very true adventure, experienced daily in my early years
