Ode to Fall

 

The pleasant days of summer wind – they are gone.
The world turns coloured – earlier come the eves
   when rosy clouds upon the rising mists
      sail in the darkening blue of heaven.
 
With falling night the brilliance is fading soon
to leave the sky for uncounted stars above.
   And in the shiver every creature feels
        winter is near and the bitter freezing.
 
Fine grain has filled the barn, and fruits are plucked,
the fields are ploughed – but the corn still stands
   and sways and ripens and waits a longer time
      gaining the sweet for its cobs in plenty.
 
The birds begin to meet and to train their wings
before they fly to warmer and distant lands.
   A last occasion for their songs of spring
      softly they try them once more but shyly.
 
 
Strong winds arise some day. In a sudden whirl
they strip of leaves bare the impatient trees.
   More rain is falling in the dark.
      Badly my heart longs for sleep this season.
